10 Major Things To Know Before Embarking On Large Scale Broiler Production

Broiler can be reared with a short time and the market is generally available. The ban of frozen food product is a boost

*BEFORE YOUR CHICKS ARRIVED*

☸Start brooding house preparation 3 weeks before the arrival of chicks

☸Wash all appliances such as feeding trough, drinkers, poultry house bowl and slippers with detergent, disinfect with Izal, lysol or morigaurd and sun dry

☸Remove old litters, dust the pen to be free of cobwebs, sweep the floor and wash the pen thoroughly with detergent and fumigate with lysol and Jik.

☸Spread new wood shavings on a dry floor

Warm the house by lighting the 60 or 100 watts bulb or charcoal or lanteen

Block all crevices with cement mix with sand to prevent predatory from entering the brooding house (rat, snakes)

☸Seal/cover the brooding house with sacks or trampoline or sacks to preserve the heat from escape as the heat is very important during brooding

☸Order for your broiler starter feed , drugs (antibiotics and vitamins) that you will need for the broiler during the first four weeks.

The following step must be followed in preparation for our day old chick.ln summary feed, medication , heat and disinfection have to be carried out for hitch free production

ARRIVAL OF DAY OLD CHICKS (DOC)*

✳When your chicks arrived, count them one by one and place them on anti stress orally, by mixing it water.

✳Provide heat for the birds to about 300-350C for the first 3 weeks depending on the weather.

✳Watch your chicks activities to know if the heat is normal for them or not especially when there is no thermometer. (Too- high temperature will make the chicks to pant, they will not eat their feed and run away from the heat source. If the heat is not enough they will cluster together; if the heat is enough they will spread evenly and will be busy eating and relaxing.

✳Your source of heat could be Kerosene stove, laterns, charcoal pot and electric bulb.

Pls note that chick are attracted to red colour, that is why their flat tray feeder is red. They need to start eating and drinking water as soon as they arrived

*FEEDS AND FEEDING*

▶Feeds account for 65-75% of feeding depending on effective management of feed.

▶Broiler birds have their feed requirement and will perform optimally when well fed.

▶1-28 days give pre-starter diet

▶28days to point of sales give broiler finishers diet

▶Broiler will eat 15.1g of starter feed per bird per day and 33.33g of finishers feed per bird per day.

▶Feed and water must be given adlibtum throughout the rearing period.

Personally, l start with super starter and l prefer the crumb one because it prevent feed wastage

Super starter is around 3700 naira,you can save some money lf u decide to go for the concentrate

For concentrate, a bag of feed will cost around 3350 naira depending on ur ingredients

A concentrate have all the needed ingredient except energy which is maize

For example top feed concentrate will require 40kg of maize

*VACCINATION AND MEDICATION*

☸Vaccination is a way of preventing disease occurrence and outbreak from the pen

✳It is done for certain poultry disease that are virulent and claim the live of the whole pen

☸It is normally done very early in the morning and given to chickens orally

It is done at stated age of the chickens

✳Must be done strictly under the supervision of an expert of a veterinary officer.

☸Medication is done to treat any disease outbreak in the pen, while some are done to prevent disease outbreak

✳Vitamins are given to prevent stress condition or reduce the impact of disease on the sick chickens

☸Use medication according to Veterinarian prescription

*BROILER VACCINATION SCHEDULE*

☸At one week old, give first Gumboro vaccine to prevent Infectious bursa disease

✳At week 2, give first Lasota vaccine to prevent New castle disease

▶At week 3, give second Gumboro

☸At week 6, give second Lasota, second Lasota can be given from week 4 to 6 depending on the state of the farm to the infections

✳Make sure you give anti stress after each vaccination

▶Maintain proper cold chain during storage and when purchasing the vaccine

☸Vaccinate all batch of birds at once

✳Strictly follow instruction and do not stretch your vaccines (mixing it with more water than recommended.

Vaccines are given too boost chick immunity.

Note. You dont vaccinate sick animals.

You dont vaccinate with chlorinated water

You vaccinate early in the morning and after you give them milk or vitamins.

If u re vaccinating your bird, you need to withdraw water from the chick a night before vaccination to improve their water intake

Vaccination have a tim e frame, it should be done within 1 hour , 10 minutes after which you flush off the remaining

Lasota and gumbo vaccine are added to water the least dose is 100dose we can have as high as 1000 dose

If you have 100 birds you will go for 100dose and mix in litre of water. 200 d will be mix in 2 litre

*HEALTH MANAGEMENT AND MEDICATION*

☸Good sanitation prevents disease outbreaks

✳Regular washing, disinfection and sun drying of drinkers, feeders and other poultry equipment

☸Poultry attendants must use foot dip or have a slippers solely meant for the house or pen

✳Water spillage must be prevented inside the pen to prevent disease outbreak

☸Regular removal of poultry droppings and sweeping of the house must be observed

✳Well managed droppings can be sold

☸Dead birds must be remove, postmortem must be done for them and must be disposed properly

✳Give more space for your chicks as they grow older

▶ coccidiosis

☸ cause -as a result of wet litters

✳ symptoms -blood stained feaca, brownish diarrhoea

▶Treatment- use amorolium, toltturazuril or any sulphur based drug

✳Chronic respiratory disease

☸ cause – cold weather bacteria

▶ symptoms-cough , sneezing, difficulty in breathing.

✳ treatment- tylosin, enrofloxacin.

☸Fowl typhoid

✳ cause by salmonella, poor hygiene

▶ symptoms- yellow green diarrhoea

✳ treatment- any broad spectrum antibiotics

✳Fowl cholera

☸ cause by pasteurella muititocida

▶ symptoms- swollen head, blackish comb and wattle

✳treatment- use broad spectrum antibiotics

☸ fowl pox –

✳cause by fowl pox virus

▶symptoms – dry pox on the comb, head, it can blind the eyes.

✳treatment use pox care, use blade to open the black spot and add penicillin powder.

*MARKETING*

✳As from 6 to 8 weeks, you can start selling broilers, because if they are well fed, they must reach 2kg live weight by 8 weeks

☸Your broilers can be sold live or dressed.

✳By 8 weeks the price range of your broiler will fall between 1500 to 4500 per one depending on your marketing strategy and cost of production.
