Manchester United have success fulfilled their long desire of having Cristiano Ronaldo play for them once gain. The news of Ronaldo’s move to the EPL had lingered for too long and was already looking like a fairytale, not until the last minute when the news broke.
Manchester United can now be regarded as one of the biggest winners in the transfer window with their latest addition, Ronaldo. The Portuguese star completed his medicals in Lisbon and is supposed to finalize his paperwork on Tuesday.
The Portuguese skipper is without doubt one of the club legends despite his move away from the club. Ronaldo played 292 games for Man Utd, scoring 118 goals during his first spell between 2003 and 2009.
Now the 36 years old wouldn’t be expecting things to play out the same way they did in the early days, not with the caliber of defenders in the EPL at the moment. Some of these defenders are capable of a whole lot and could make things tough for the Ballon d’or winner when he officially steps onto the pitch after the International break.
There are 3 defenders who are note worthy in this case study, they are capable of a lot of things and could pose a big threat to Ronaldo’s goal scoring capabilities in the league;
1. Antonio Rudiger (Chelsea)
Chelsea’s UEFA Champions League success wouldn’t be a reality if not for the defensive heroics of the German ‘war horse’, who was a solid rock in Chelsea’s defence line.
He played only 19 EPL games for Chelsea last season and conceded 10 goals when he partnered with other defenders which helped the team in the league. He’s a very tough defender, who is also physical in his tackles and Ronaldo doesn’t enjoy playing against such players.
He has a very good recovery rate which means he doesn’t concede to pressure when he or a teammate loses the ball. He does his best to recover the ball back from the opponent.
2. Ruben Dias (Manchester City)
The 24-year old portuguese defender had a beautiful run last season after he joined the City from Benfica. His presence in City’s defence during the previous season has been tagged the best thing to happen to the club’s defence line since Kompany left in 2019.
Dias influence in the defence isn’t exaggerated as he was instrumental to the club’s success last season, helping them to the top of the table finish in the league, thereby claiming the Premier League trophy and the league’s ‘Player of the Year’ award in his maiden season.
Dias and Ronaldo have shared the same dressing room at the national level and surely he would have a fair knowledge of the attacker’s capabilities which may give him an edge against him in the league. Dias has stats to show his defensive capabilities when it comes clearances, recoveries, and duels won.
3. Virgil Van Dijk
Virgil Van Dijk’s move to Liverpool from Southampton would surely go down in he teams history, he had been able to form a strong wall at the back for the Reds.
Van Dijk transformed Liverpool’s defence into that poses a live threat to Europe’s elite teams. Virgil played a crucial role into winning the Liverpool’s Premier league triumph in 2020 and the Champions league in 2019.
Virgil is a very good defender in the air and such abilities are a threat to Ronaldo who is also known for his aerial abilities.
According to Premier league stats, the number of duels he has won since joining the league is over a thousand, while that of aerial battle is almost 800; these stats illustrates his ability to go into tackles and win the ball back successful.
