The Pole, 33, is believed to be favourite alongside Messi to pick up the real award, having only missed out last year due to the event being scrapped after Covid-19’s impact on the football calendar. Lewandowski broke Gerd Muller’s record of 40 goals in a single Bundesliga season this year on his way to winning the title, while already netting a staggering 25 goals in 19 games this season. Second-placed Salah’s own performances have resembled a prime Messi this season as the Liverpool striker ends November having scored 17 goals across 17 matches. Yet Messi has netted just one Ligue 1 goal this season after his transfer to the Parisian giants, which may impact the Ballon d'Or outcome.
4 football legends who criticised Messi’s seventh Ballon d’ Or

Reactions have poured in following Lionel Messi’s victory at the 2021 Ballon d’Or award ceremony, where the Argentine won his seventh title as football’s most prestigious individual award.

Many people believe that other players, particularly Robert Lewandowski, were more deserving of the award, and four football legends have spoken out.

#4. Oliver Kahn

Bayern Munich CEO and two-time Ballon d’Or winner Oliver Kahn were among the critics, claiming that Lewandowski deserved both the Ballon d’Or and the Striker of the Year award.

“Lewandowski would have deserved both the Ballon d’Or and his top scorer award because he has consistently performed at the highest level for years,” Khan told the German newspaper Bild.

“Lionel Messi, congratulations! Even without the Ballon d’Or, Lewy has long been regarded as soccer great. In the coming years, he will continue to be a candidate for the Ballon d’Or “Bayern’s CEO concluded.

#3. Lothar Matthaus

Former Ballon d’Or winner Lothar Matthaus criticized the decision not to award the award to Lewandowski, claiming that the Polish striker has been the best player over the last two years.

He also emphasized Lewandowski’s trophy haul since 2020, as well as his goal of breaking Gerd Muller’s 40-goal league record during the 2020/21 season.

“To be honest, I don’t know what I’m talking about anymore. “With all due respect to Messi and the other great players mentioned, none deserved it more than Lewandowski,” Sky Germany reported.

“France Football did not award the prize last year, and if only for the titles that Robert has won with Bayern 2020, he is unrivalled not only in the last two years.”

“However, even if you only consider 2021, he was better than the rest.” He broke Gerd Muller’s century record, is once again at the top of the top scorer list in every competition, and has surpassed everyone nationally and internationally this year.”

#2. Iker Casillas

Iker Casillas, a legendary Spanish goalkeeper, questioned the veracity of football awards, claiming that determining who the best player is should not be so difficult.

“It is becoming increasingly difficult for me to believe in football awards,” the former Real Madrid goalkeeper said on Twitter. Messi is one of the best, but at the end of the season, you need to know who the most outstanding player was. It’s not that difficult.”

In the race for the 2021 Ballon d’Or, Robert Lewandowski finished second to Lionel Messi. He was named the inaugural Striker of the Year award winner for his 56 goals in the 2021 calendar year.

#1. Toni Kross

Toni Kroos, a current Real Madrid midfielder, believes Lionel Messi was not deserving of the award and that other players should have gone ahead of him.

“It is completely undeserved.” There is no doubt that Messi, along with Cristiano, has been the player of the last decade, but there should have been others ahead of him this year,” Kroos tweeted after the awards ceremony.
