Antonio Conte has been tipped as the favorite to succeed Jose Mourinho at Manchester United.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s position at Manchester United may be secure for the time being, but that could be due to the club’s’major reservations’ about bringing in Antonio Conte. On Monday, reports surfaced outlining the tumultuous atmosphere at the club following their humiliating 5-0 loss to Liverpool.
Although the players were granted the day off from training, club management were alleged to have held discussions over Solskjaer’s future.
Following a successful season last year, the Norwegian head coach was rewarded with a new three-year contract this summer.
However, since the end of September, the team’s performance has deteriorated, ending in a humiliating loss to arch rivals Liverpool.
As he limped off the ground, Solskjaer struck a lonely figure, confessing after the game that it was his “darkest day” in football.
And it appeared that it would be his final game in charge at Old Trafford, with reports on Monday indicating that the club was pushing forward in negotiations with Conte.
Conte reportedly’said yes’ in initial talks with the Red Devils, according to Italian media.
However, it appears that Solskjaer will be given more time to make things right.
He’ll be in charge this weekend against Tottenham, as United seeks their first league victory since September.
Conte has been available since leaving Inter Milan in the summer, but the United administration appears to be concerned about how the Italian manager might fit in.
United have two key reasons, according to Jan Aage Fjortoft, for not moving further with Conte’s appointment.
He tweeted, “There appears to be a significant doubt at Manchester United as to whether Conte is the best manager for the job or the best manager AVAILABLE for the job.”
Zinedine Zidane has also been mentioned as a possible successor at Old Trafford, although he is reportedly waiting for a better opportunity.
Gary Neville has already spoken out against Conte replacing Solskjaer.
“They’re not going to send in a hitman.” They’ll continue with Ole, and he needs to win this season,” he stated.
“He’d be in trouble tonight [Sunday] at any other club.”
“Jose was the best manager on the planet, but he couldn’t pull it off.” Conte isn’t someone I’d welcome into United. He isn’t the right fit for United.
