Arsenal is being reactive, not proactive – Their activities in the past and this summer are proofs
If you ask any Arsenal fans why the club have being unable to win the English premier league in the last 17 years while their local rival Chelsea have won it five times within that space of time, their response is that Chelsea is buying the league.
By buying the league, they aren’t implying that Chelsea are making any misstep in England. What they meant is that the club has spent huge amount of money on recruiting Players and these players in turn helped the blues to attain domestic glories and European conquest.
Arsenal fans are right about one thing though. Chelsea have spent a lot of money in the past to reach the top in England. When Abramovich bought the club in 2003, Chelsea signed Petr Cech, Ricardo Carvalho, Paulo Ferreira and Didier Drogba in one summer.
Back then, it was easier to sign Players as clubs doesn’t need to spend hundreds of millions of Pounds before getting a decent squad. Spending just £10million or £20million was a big deal and that was what Chelsea did, and it paid off.
Arsene Wenger’s assembled an invincible Arsenal Squad that won the English premier league in 2004 without losing a single Match. Thierry Henry whom the club signed from AS Monaco for a reported fee of £11million was the most expensive player in that squad.
However, things has changed. Gone are those days when you win a title having invested little or nothing on squad development. In the last few years, Chelsea have been splashing hefty sum of money on Squad reinforcement. Christian Pulisic, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Alvaro Morata, Kai Havertz and Romelo Lukaku among others are players that Chelsea signed at a club record fee.
Arsenal have tried to flow in the direction of the tide but the club is yet to Strike gold with their Signings. In the last 3 years, Arsenal have break their club record signing fee three times. They broke the record when they signed Alexandre Lacazette, Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang and Nicolas Pepe.
Despite all these expenses, the performance of the club is still declining. Why is that? One of the logical explanations for that is that Arsenal is reactive instead of being proactive.
During the days of Arsene Wenger, the French Gaffer usually identifies the player he wants before signing them but that seems to have ended at Arsenal since Wenger left the club.
You see the performance of the Signings of the club on the pitch and then you question why the club even made those Signings in the first place. In the last two seasons, Arsenal signed David Luiz and Willian as free agents.
The Gunners offered Willian 3 years contract last summer. During the 2020/21 season, Willian made 25 league appearances for Arsenal. He scored just one goal and made 5 assists.
Arsenal wanted a Defender and the best they could do was paying £50million to Brighton and Hove Albion for Ben White. Compared that with the fee that Manchester United paid to Real Madrid to sign Raphael Varane who’s a World Cup Winner and multiple UEFA Champions League medalist.
Earlier on this summer, Arsenal lost the bid to sign Emiliano Buendia from Norwich City to Aston Villa. Finding a replacement to that was supposed to be the next step for Arsenal to take but they went silent on that.
Newly-promoted Brentford thrashed Arsenal 2-0 in the opening Match of the English premier league last Saturday. Although, one should not forget that Arsenal were missing many key players but one thing that was apparent in that Match is that the club lacked creativity in the middle.
Arsenal is back on transfer market scampering around to sign a playmaker. James Maddison has been linked with the club but there’s nothing solid on that deal yet.
