Ballon D'or: 5 Players that will not make the Top 5 of the shortlist despite their outstanding 2021 Ballon D’or: 5 Players that will not make the Top 5 of the shortlist despite their outstanding 2021

The Ballon D’or is back. The 30-man shortlist for the prestigious prize along with nominees for other awards were released on the 8th of this month.

Aside from the men’s Ballon D’or, the women Ballon D’or, Yachine trophy and Kopa trophy will also be awarded. The Yachine trophy will be awarded to the goalkeeper of the year while the Kopa trophy is awarded to the young player of the year and nominees for both awards were also released.

30 players across Europe top 5 leagues were nominated for the award with Gianluigi Donnarumma being the only goalkeeper on the list. The 30-man list will be reduced to three on the 29th of November during the Gala ceremony. The ceremony is scheduled to take place at the Théâtre du Châtelet, same as the 2019 Gala venue. Didier Drogba has also been confirmed to anchor the ceremony which he did in 2019.

Despite 30 players being nominated for the award, here are 5 players that won’t make the top 5 despite having a strong start to the season and an incredible 2021.

1. Cristiano Ronaldo

At 36 and still breaking records. What a 2021 the portuguese superstar has had. He scooped the Serie A top scorer award as well as that of the Euros. He has also had quite a start to the season with Manchester United after securing a return to his boyhood club during the insane summer. Despite the records broken, awards won and current form, Cristiano Ronaldo won’t make it to the Top 5 of the final Ballon D’or list.

He hasn’t done enough to be ahead of the likes of Karim Benzema, N’Golo Kante, Jorginho Frello, Robert Lewandowski, Kylian Mbappe and Leo Messi.

2. Romelu Lukaku

Serie A MVP with Inter Milan. He ended Juventus’ scudetto run with Inter last season and was instrumental in Belgium’s quaterfinal run at the Euros. He secured a return to the blues during the summer and has already grabbed couple of goals to his name. Despite the year Big Rom has had, he is likely to miss out on the Top 5 of the final Ballon D’or ranking.

3. Kevin De Bruyne

The Midfield maestro was on the verge of completing a quadruple with Manchester City last season. With 10 goals and 10 assists to his name, he was able to defend his PFA player of the year ahead of teammate Ruben Dias. He helped Manchester City lift the prestigious premier League trophy as well as the Carabao cup. He was instrumental in their Champions League run as they got to their first final in the club’s history. He was also a key player for Belgium during the Euros tournament.

Despite the maestro’s achievements, he is likely to miss out on the top 5 position of the Ballon D’or.

4. Kylian Mbappe

PSG’s star player received a nomination for the UCL forward of the season alongside Robert Lewandowski and Erling Haaland. Unfortunately, lost it to Erling Haaland. He sent the football world on notice after scoring 4 goals across 2 legs against Fc Barcelona in the round of 16 of the Champions League. He guided his side to a Semifinal run in the Champions League and lifted the Trophee des Champions and Coup de France with Paris Saint-Germain. He guided France to a UEFA Nations League victory this month after scoring in both the Semifinal and the final. A poor Euro 2020 form will definitely deny the poacher a place in the top 5.

5. Mohammed Salah

Name a player currently better than the Egyptian king, I will wait. Despite Salah’s strong start to the season, he will definitely miss out on the top 5 of the Ballon D’or award after a poor 2020/2021 with Liverpool. The Egyptian king and Liverpool ended last season without a trophy after their season was hampered by injuries to their players. They struggled to secure a top 4 finish in the Premier League but were lucky enough to finish the season in third place. He is arguably the best player in the world currently. He has provided attacking returns in 95% of the matches he has played for the Reds but unfortunately, that won’t count in this year’s judging criteria but will definitely be looked at in next year’s.

My Top 5 for the Prestigious award in the correct order are; Leo Messi, Robert Lewandowski, Jorginho Frello, N’Golo Kante and Karim Benzema.

Which player/players are you tipping to make it to the top 5 of the award?
