Meanwhile, this was the first fixture between the sides, and Villarreal is the ninth Spanish side Chelsea faced in UEFA club competition. The venue of the clash was Windsor Park, Belfast, Northern Ireland. Villarreal were Europa League holders while, Chelsea are Champions League holders. Chelsea lost in three Super Cup final ,they lost against Bayern Munich , Atletico Madrid and Liverpool and won against Villareall.
Taking a critical look at both sides performances in European Football last season, Villarreal have to overcome two top English teams to win the Europa League title this year. Villarreal defeated English side Arsenal and beat Manchester United in the final to lift their first European title in history, while Chelsea kept 9 clean sheets from group stages of the competition to the knockout stages as they beat City in the final to win the Champions League.
Chelsea boss Tuchel made 2 mistakes during Villarreal clash that could have cost him the trophy.
1. In the 65th minute of the second half Tuchel made a very costly mistake to replace Ngolo Kante with Jorginho. Though, the French man wasn’t really at his best, but his presence in the field made a difference for the Blues.
Kante is good defensively and in counter attacking football. The yellow submarine put more pressure on the Blues till they had breakthrough in 73rd minute as Gerard Moreno strike put Villarreal back to the contest.
2. Tuchel made another costly mistake as he reacted poorly to the decision of Rudiger’s challenge on Pino, and he was yellow carded by the referee. The Blues boss was lucky not to be sent off. If Tuchel was sent off, the contest could have favoured Villarreal. Rudiger was booked for his challenge on Pino which was probably a fair decision by the centre Referee.
Kepa Arrizabalaga was brought on for Edward Mendy with two minutes remaining in extra-time as a Blues prepared for penalties. Kepa was the hero for the night, as he ended up saving 2 spot-kick as Chelsea won the UEFA Super Cup.
This is the second trophy for Chelsea under Thomas Tuchel who only arrived at Stamford Bridge in January. The Blues manager have done excellently well for Chelsea, winning two European title within 7 months of his managerial reign at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea won the UEFA Champions League in the month of May, and the UEFA Super Cup in the month of August 2021.
