The Blues attempted to recruit Sevilla defender Jules Kounde, but the deal fell through owing to Sevilla’s asking price.
The Blues have shifted their focus to Juventus centre-back Matthijs de Ligt after failing to sign Kounde over the summer, according to Italian media source Il Bianconero.
Another Italian news site, Calciomercato, backs up the story, claiming that the Blues are prepared to trade Timo Werner plus cash in exchange for the Dutch defender.
Juventus, on the other hand, is delighted with Chelsea’s offer since they do not want to part with De Ligt for money and a forward who has struggled at Stamford Bridge.
Former Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri has praised the 22-year-old defender, saying that he would go on to become one of the finest defenders in the world.
“I am the first to be persuaded that he will become the finest defender in the world,” the Italian said Sky Sport Italia in January 2020, while still managing Juve.
