Donny van de Beek’s agent’s comments could spell trouble for Manchester United

The Dutchman’s agent has hit out at United after the club blocked his attempts to find a move for the player this summerDonny van de Beek could have been on his way out of United this summer

According to his agent, Guido Albers, there was significant interest in Donny van de Beek during the summer transfer window.

In an interview with Voetball International, Albers said; “Today, I have been trying to find a club for Donny. Everyone knows the situation. We worked very hard for it, but [Manchester United] is blocking everything. There was much interest from Italy, Germany and England.”

Albers went on to claim that Everton were ready to make a loan offer for the midfielder and that his client had made it clear he wanted to move away from the club to try and restart his career.

“[They] looked to be giving permission, but eventually they didn’t. It’s been painful lately,” Albers said of his player’s situation at United.

“And now he’s lost his spot in the Dutch national team, while he works just as hard as he always did.”

It’s safe to say since van de Beek made the move to United it has not gone to plan. He only managed 515 minutes of football in the Premier League last season, scoring one goal and registering one assist.

This is a huge step down from his time with Ajax where in his last two seasons with the club he registered eight goals and five assists in 1916 minutes.

When van de Beek signed for the club, it was reported that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was going to play the Dutchman in the number ten role, providing an alternative option to Bruno Fernandes.

However, I don’t think anyone in the club could have predicted the impact the Portuguese midfielder was going to have last season.

He didn’t suffer any injuries and topped the charts for both goals and assists as he led United to a second-place finish in the league and the Europa League. This obviously left van de Beek in limbo.

He’s been an unused substitute in all three of United’s games so far this season, with Solskjaer favouring several different combinations in the pivot, none of which featured the Dutch midfielder.

Given the problems United have faced against Southampton and Wolverhampton Wanderers early on this season, it seems strange that van de Beek has not even looked close to being given minutes on the field.

But the major problem with the Dutchman is that United have so many options that are better than him in the roles he can play.

As a number ten, he can’t replace Fernandes, as a deep-lying playmaker, he doesn’t have the passing ability of Paul Pogba and in terms of playing more defensively, United’s best option there is a combination of Scott McTominay and Fred.

But when you sign a player for £35million, surely you must have a role for him in mind?

MEN Sport understand that one of the main reasons United didn’t sign a midfielder this summer was because they believed they had six options to choose from in midfield.

But if it is true that van de Beek wanted to leave the club, would it not have been better to accept an offer for the player and look to sign a specialist that improved the starting XI?

In his current position, van de Beek is unlikely to be afforded much game time at United and has subsequently lost his spot in the Netherlands squad.

Manager Louis van Gaal, who since his time at United has been very vocal in his criticism of the club, said in his press conference about van de Beek’s omission: “You have to play matches. That’s not that hard, is it? It’s just logical thinking.”

It’s unclear what the future holds for van de Beek at United, but with the transfer window now closed and the Dutchman still a United player, he’s got a huge task on his hands if he’s to work his way into Solskjaer’s plans.

Whether he will see more game time after the international break is unclear, but if his agent is to be believed, the player may begin to voice his displeasure if his situation at the club doesn’t improve.

And if this is the case, United could regret not parting ways with him when they had the chance.
