EPL: Three Nigerian Defenders That Can Replace Rudiger At Chelsea
Antonio Rudiger remains an integral part of Chelsea’s backline and a favorite defender of many Chelsea supporters. The defender is also among the club’s stars that have maintained good form since the arrival of Thomas Tuchel.
Last season, he was part of the Chelsea team that overcame negative odds to win the Champions League even as injuries hampered his plight. It can also be observed that he is part of the reason why Chelsea has not conceded many goals this season.
However, there have been numerous media reports concerning his long contractual talks, which seem to be unending. There are also speculations that the defender might be heading to Germany despite his claims of wanting to stay at Chelsea. And if he leaves, the club will need to get a replacement as there appear to be few options at the back.
Nevertheless, three Nigerian players seem to have qualities that are quite similar to those of Rudiger and can fill the gap that the German might leave in the defense. To be specific, below are three Nigerian defenders that can replace Rudiger.
1. William Troost-Ekong
It would somehow be tough to speak about the best defenders in Watford’s team without mentioning Troost-Ekong. The Super Eagles captain is also among the few Nigerian defenders that can replace Rudiger in the Blues’ squad. He tackles well and also makes valuable interceptions as Rudiger does for Chelsea.
2. Leon Balogun
Balogun will seemingly not be excluded if a list of good EPL defenders is made. The Rangers’ defender seems to be on fire as Steven Gerrard recently made good remarks concerning his game. Chelsea will have a great rock in its back three if this Nigerian defender is brought in to replace Rudiger.
3. Semi Ajayi
Despite not being able to remain in the EPL with his side West Brom, Ajayi possesses good qualities that can help the Blues’ defense. The player can also replace Rudiger if the German departs.
