Layers Vs Broilers. Which Is More Profitable? A Guide To Poultry Farming

Are you confused about what type of chickens to start rearing in your poultry business? Well, you should not be after reading my article. I will explain the advantages and disadvantages of keeping each type of birds.

What are broilers and layer chickens?

Broilers are birds reared for meat production. Due to good genes, broilers grow faster than ordinary chickens and layers. On the other hand, layers are birds kept primarily for egg production. They are better layers when compared to ordinary female chickens.

Without much further ado, let us see the advantages and disadvantages of broilers and layers.

1) Nutrition

Layers need more feeds to sustain maximum egg production, unlike broilers. They need energy, proteins, fats, minerals and vitamins. Because most of the costs of rearing poultry are in feeding, it is safe to say the layers are more costly to start when compared to broilers.

2) Floor Space

In livestock farming, floor space is vital as it helps prevent space-related diseases and losses, eases feeding and enhances proper growth of the flock. The ideal floor space for broilers is 1-2 square feet while for layers it is 2.5 to 3 square feet. In case you are planning to start a poultry farm but there is limited space, you may opt for layers.

3) Marketing

Layers are easier to market compared to broilers. This is because eggs can be stored without going bad. As a farmer, you will not be desperate to sell the eggs, and when the eggs are sold it helps you buy chicken feeds. On the other hand, broilers will continue feeding even though there is no market to sell them. The continued insufficient market for broilers translates into losses to the farmer due to the costs of feeding.

4) Immunization and Treatment of Diseases

For broilers to attain market weight, it takes 6-8 weeks. It is a short period compared to layers that may take up to 18 weeks before starting to lay eggs. Now, the money you will spend on treating and immunizing your chickens against diseases and infections is significantly higher for layers compared to broilers.

5) Skills needed for poultry farmer beginners

For first-time poultry farmers, there is better room for you to learn with broilers, unlike layers. This is because you incur fewer costs in terms of vaccinations and space.

6) Long term Revenue

Although the broilers require less initial capital, in the long run, layers are more profitable because of their egg-laying ability. Besides, the layers can also be sold for meat.
