Following their Improved second half performance against Atalanta yesterday that inspired a crucial comeback victory, Manchester United’s next game will see them play host to one of their arch rivals Liverpool in the Premier league this weekend. The game which is scheduled to kick-off by 16:00 West Africa Standard time on Sunday will mark the 59th meeting between these two sides in the top flight since 1992.

However, despite Wednesday’s win, the Red contingent of Manchester must be at their very best if they are to come away with a decent result against an in form Liverpool side who will stop at nothing to cause them problems especially with players like Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah at their disposal. Ahead of the crunch encounter, take a look at how United fared in their last five Premier league meetings with the Reds at Old Trafford;

1- Manchester United 2 vs 4 Liverpool (13 May 2021)

This match was initially scheduled to hold on 2nd May, but due a serious protest by the Old Trafford supporters, the game was postponed. When it was finally played 11 days later, the negative effect of the protest somehow got the better of Manchester United as Liverpool secured a 4-2 comeback win courtesy of goals from Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Diogo Jota.

Adam Lallana struck in the 85th minute to cancelled out Marcus Rashford’s first half goal as both teams settled for a share of the points. The result of this match ended Liverpool’s 17 game winning run and left United in 13th place with 10 points.

3- Manchester United 0 vs 0 Liverpool (24 February 2019)

In a game that produced only few chances, United were forced to use up all of their three substitutions in the first half as both sides were unable to break the deadlock in a stalemate.

4- Manchester United 2 vs 1 Liverpool (10 March 2018)

Two well taken goals by Marcus Rashford in the first half propelled United to an epic win despite Eric Bailly’s 66th minute own goal.

5- Manchester United 1 vs 1 Liverpool (15 January 2017)

A close-range header from Zlatan Ibrahimovic with only six minutes to go gave Manchester United a share of the points in a frantic contest against Liverpool. Despite enjoying a lion share of the possession, the Red Devils were made to work hard to earn themselves a draw.

Matches between these two sides in the past has always been engaging as titles were won and lost. From the above statistics, it is crystal clear that Manchester United and Liverpool have been evenly matched as both teams have shared one win apiece and three draws in their last five Premier league meetings at Old Trafford. With United hoping to climb up the table and Liverpool looking to close the gap at the top of the summit on Chelsea, who will come out top this Sunday?
