The declaration of Man City as title favourites is expected; yet, Chelsea remains the team to beat.
Rio Ferdinand argued that Pep Guardiola’s Man City dominated Chelsea so badly when they met two weeks ago on September 25th in the EPL, and even went on to win the tie. He also claims that in a recent match against Liverpool, another title favorite, Mancity also dominated, which, in his opinion, is a clear indication that Mancity is indeed the title favourite and the team to beat.
Speaking on the FIVE YouTube channel, Rio Ferdinand is quoted as saying: “I was sitting there believing Chelsea were the team to beat in the first four games of the season. After three of four games, I believe Man City is the side to beat. They’ve looked really good against the big teams. They dominated Chelsea away [last weekend], and they dominated Liverpool in the first half on Sunday and should have won.
However, I still believe his sudden change of opinion is nothing. Chelsea’s determination to lift the EPL trophy is unwavering.
Last season, Mancity dominated teams in all competitions, including the FA Cup and UCL. However, their domination of teams did not make them lift the UCL or the FA Cup. It is not going to be different this season.
On a more serious note, aside from Liverpool, all teams have lost one or two games this season. And as the season progresses, more and more losses will be recorded. However, what will eventually determine who will be the eventual winners of the EPL title and the team to beat is certainly not how they fair in big matches, rather how well they fair in the rest of the remaining matches. Chelsea has done well in those matches and I believe it will count in the long run.
The fact that Chelsea have played 90% of the big teams, and still remain at the top of the table proves that Rio Ferdinand’s sudden declaration is nothing more than a mere change of stance resulting from being tossed about by the waves of results in the EPL. Chelsea have played Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham, and Man City and have claimed a total of 7 points out of 12 with just one loss. Manchester City achieved the same result in the same scenario.
So, in my opinion, Chelsea’s stance as the team to beat has not changed simply because they were dominated by Mancity. It is surely going to be a tough battle in the EPL, but I am certain that in the end, Chelsea will win the league title and be the team to beat. As we shall soon see, Man City’s dominance of Chelsea may have very little to play in the title race.
