Manchester United has lost three of their last four games in all competitions and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer knows that he has to start getting results. The Norwegian tactician afforded Young Boys too much respect when he switched his formation to a back three after Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s red card. He also made the same mistake against Aston Villa. He used a midfield axis of McTominay and Fred, a partnership that is not known for their attacking input. This hampered the Red Devils’ chance of getting a goal.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer can’t afford to make such a mistake against Villarreal, a team that has won only one of their last six league games, drawing the other five. They haven’t lost in the league this season and this shows they are strong defensively. Therefore, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has to use his best strikers, and currently, Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani are the picks of the bunch. The Uruguayan returned to action last weekend and his energy upfront could be the extra drive Manchester United needs to overcome a stubborn Villarreal side.
Below are two ways Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could line his team up with the two strikers in the starting XI:
Line Up 1 ( 4-4-2 Diamond)
Manchester United could lineup in a 4-4-2 diamond formation. David De Gea should start as the goalkeeper. With Luke Shaw unlikely to play due to injury, Alex Telles could play on the left of the defence, Victor Lindelof and Raphaël Varane in the centre, and Diogo Dalot on the right since Aaron Wan-Bissaka is suspended.
In midfield, Scott McTominay should lineup as the defensive midfielder, Paul Pogba on the left, Jadon Sancho on the right, and Bruno Fernandes at the tip of the diamond. The front two positions should be filled by Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani.
Line Up 2 ( 4-2-3-1 formation)
The Norwegian could also line his team up in his preferred 4-2-3-1 formation although it would be detrimental to Cristiano Ronaldo. The back five should remain the same as the one in the first lineup. The defensive midfielder should be Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba, although there is a case for Nemanja Matic to start alongside Paul Pogba because of the defensive security that the Serbian offers.
Cristiano Ronaldo could start on the left-wing, Bruno Fernandes as the no. 10, and Jadon Sancho on the right. The attack would then be led by Edinson Cavani.
