Its been an exciting Champions League campaign so far owing to the flurry of goals scored and the series of dramatic results. There’s still 48 games left to be played in order to ascertain the 16 teams that will make it to the knockout stages, the 8 teams that will drop to the Europa league and the 8 that will be eliminated from Europe completely.
However, while a number of clubs will have to wait until the final group games to know their fate, there are those who could secure their ticket to the round of 16 if they win their next group game.
1- Paris Saint Germain
The French side have accumulated 7 points so far and sit top of group A. Should the defeat Club Brugge again next month, they will secure their place in the next round. This is because RasenBallsport Leipzig are currently on zero point and irrespective of the outcome of their game against Manchester City, a win for PSG in Belgium will qualify them as no other team in the group other than the Premier league Champions can finish above them given the head to head rules.
The Reds are five points clear of Atletico Madrid and FC Porto in top spot and should they defeat the La Liga Champions in the return leg at Anfield next month, their passage to the next round will be secured.
Following their dismantling of Borrusia Dortmund this week, Ajax are one step away from confirming their place in the next round, but that will be dependent on the outcome of their next game in Signal Iduna Park. Should they beat the German side again, then the head to head rules will secure their safe passage with two games to spare.
4- Bayern Munich
Four goals in 14 minutes in the second half for Bayern Munich against Benfica yesterday means that the Bundesliga Champions are one win away from qualification. A feat they can confirm by beating their Portuguese opponent again next month.
5- Red Bull Salzburg
The Austrian Champions have placed themselves in a good position for the round of 16 and all they need to do is defeat Wolfsburg in Germany next month irrespective of the outcome of the game between their other two group competitors Sevilla and Lille.
Seeing that Malmo are still on zero point while the Serie A side have nine, a win for them against Zenit St Petersburg in Turin next month will see the Old Lady qualify to the next round.
All the aforementioned teams have their own destinies in their hands and this means they will not be relying on the result of their other group competitors as long as they win theirs. However, although winning their next game will qualify them, it won’t come with a guarantee of a top spot in their respective groups.
