A humiliating 4-1 defeat to Watford in the weekend spelt the end of Ole Gunnar’s almost 3-years tenure as Manchester United boss, with Michael Carrick now tasked, at least for now, to move the squad forward until a permanent manager is named.

It is obvious to blame Ole Gunnar for Manchester United’s poor result but some of the players in this United current squad are also responsible for the club’s recent woes. Six(6) defeats in eleven(11) games for Manchester United have left the club in eight(8) position in the premier League table, with another defeat in Villarreal likely to condemn Manchester United to playing Europa League football for the rest of the season, depending on the results of the last matchday. This match is obviously a must win for Micheal Carrick and his crew and to do so, he needs to drop some players that have performed abysmal under Ole Gunnar.

Ahead of the match at Estadio De la Ceramica on Tuesday, 06:45pm (GM +1), we shall look at three(3) Manchester United players Micheal Carrick should drop and How he should Set Up his team.

3 Players Micheal Carrick should drop Against Villarreal

#1. Harry Maguire

On the field, Harry Maguire has offered no real leadership from the back and was culpable for Manchester United collapse against Watford in the weekend. Clumsy and uninteresting physical presence, the England International should be benched atleast for now.

#2. Wan-bissaka

Manchester United problem has been defence, with Wan-bissaka coming in for criticism in recent matches for his reckless tackles and inaccurate crosses into the opposition’s box. He should be benched and another given the nod in the right side defence.

#3. Luke Shaw

Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw have lacked clear communication and was culpable for Manchester City’s 2-0 win at Old Trafford in Matchday 11. The left back has dipped in form, and it is surprising Alex Telles hasn’t been given the chance to push him to make significant improvement. Though he may be unavailable due to a reported head injury against Watford, he should be left out of this match even if he recovers in time.

How Micheal Carrick Should Set Up his team.

Paul Pogba, Raphael Varane and Edison Cavani are obvious doubt for this clash through injuries,

Micheal Carrick should deploy a 4-4-2 formation, with Eric Bailey and Lindelof to be deployed in the central defence that comprises Dalot in the right back defence and Alex Telles in the left back. De Gea should keep his spot in goal.

In the deep midfield, Nemanja Matic and Donny Van De Beek should start, with Jesse Lingard starting in the left attacking midfield and Jadon Sancho in the right attacking midfield.

Upfront, Bruno Fernandes should start in a supporting striker role behind Cristiano Ronaldo.

Predicted Match outcome

Away to Villarreal on Tuesday, Manchester United will hope to put an end to their recent woes and pick up a vital win that will put them in a better position to qualify for the next round in this competition. But Villarreal have grown better in their last three matches, winning two(2) and drawn one, and will been keen to take advantage of United’s disjointed backline. Cristiano Ronaldo proved the difference in the last fixture between these two teams in England, and will be out to make amends after missing some clear goal scoring chances against Watford. However, the match is likely to end in a draw on Tuesday night.
