In a squad that contained international stars like, Mikel Obi, Brown Ideye, Victor Moses, Emmanuel Emenike, it was Sunday Mba who would go on to become, Nigeria’s hero in the final against Burkina Faso, helping the Super Eagles of Nigeria win their third AFCON title.

The national team coached under Stephen Keshi, had invited six home based players to the squad, among whom was Sunday Mba. Going into the tournament, Nigeria was not seen as a possible contender for the title, and two draws in the group stage was about to send the team out of the tournament, but all thanks to Victor Moses, the Super Eagles would win their final group stage game against Ethiopia.

It wasn’t until the quarter final, that Sunday Mba would get a chance to play in the team, and rewarded coach Stephen Keshi confidence in him, by scoring the winning goal against Ivory Coast.

The final against Burkina Faso was seen by many as a work over for the Super Eagles, but it wasn’t until the 40th minute that they scored the only goal of the game. Sunday Mba goal in that match would ensure that Nigeria won the AFCON that year.

But despite his successful outing with the the national team, Mba’s club career would however take a downturn. After his exploits with the national team, Mba was sent on loan to fellow Nigeria club side, Enugu Rangers from Warri Wolves.

After his brief stint with Enugu Rangers, Mba would sign a protracted contract deal with CA Bastia, a team that plays in the second division of the French league, after a year with the club, Mba would leave to join Yeni Malatyaspor, a club in the Turkish Super Lig.

Mba would spend just a year with his new team, and has been looking for a new team, since after he was released in 2017.
