The reason for this article is not to undermine Manchester United as a club or project Chelsea and Liverpool as perfect clubs, but this is an insight or a general summary of how the two clubs were expected to perform at the beginning of the season in comparison to what is obtainable currently. The guiding question is “Are Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United performing up to expectations?
Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool all kicked off this season on a winning note with United beating Leads United 5:1 at Old Trafford, while Liverpool and Chelsea recorded 0:3 and 3:0 wins against Norwich and Crystal Palace respectively. These emphatic wins on the match day 1 strengthened their fans hope of having an exciting season.
With 9 matches down the line, Chelsea currently leads the Premier League table on 22 points with Liverpool closely following on 21 points. Liverpool also has a better goal difference of 21 (thanks to Manchester United) to Chelsea’s 20, while Chelsea has a better defensive record haven conceded only 3 goals compared to Liverpool’s 6 in nine premier league matches. Chelsea and Liverpool are still competing in all 4 competitions while United is out of the EFL competition already.
The case of Manchester United is an opposite of what the two clubs above are experiencing. The Manchester based club is placed 7th on the table with 14 points (the same points with Arsenal who occupies the 10th position). United defence summarized how poor they have been this season as they have conceded 15 goals in 9 matches with 9 of those goals coming from Liverpool and Leicester City. A bad sign underlining the team’s poor performance.
The expectations of many Manchester United fans was that their team would be leading the league table especially as Cristiano Ronaldo was added to the squad at the start of the season. Unfortunately, Manchester United has failed in the business of securing the available points while Chelsea and Liverpool are battling it out at the top of the league table.
