Why didn’t we sign a DM? Why wasn’t Martial sold? Man United fans’ questions answered as summer transfer window ends
After big-name arrivals like Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo in one window, Winnaijatv takes a look at some questions that have been on the minds of Manchester United fans.
Q. Why didn’t we sign a defensive midfielder?
It’s not like United didn’t try to sign a defensive midfielder this summer. We were linked with Declan Rice but the move fell apart thanks to West Ham’s £100m valuation.
Eduardo Camavinga was another option but the French teenager had his heart set on joining Real Madrid – and he did.
Saul Niguez was yet another option for us but he opted to move to Chelsea in a deadline-day move instead.
Unless a player is 100% sure about playing for our club (good examples are Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane), it makes no sense to spend big just to fill a position.
With the current squad, the Red Devils can challenge for the title till December at least. But it will be of utmost importance to address the defensive midfield position in the winter window.
Q. Why sell Dan James and not Martial?
Daniel James was open to a move in search of regular game time. As per The Athletic, the winger was informed he’d be ‘surplus to requirements’ after his performance vs Wolves.
Anthony Martial, on the other hand, has opted to stay and fight for his place – even though Edinson Cavani, Mason Greenwood and Cristiano Ronaldo are in the mix. The Frenchman’s contract runs till 2024 and United have to honour that.
Lyon wanted to sign Martial on loan but it was the 25-year-old’s decision to turn it down.
Q. Why not go for a younger striker than Ronaldo?
Again, we were linked with Erling Haaland but Borussia Dortmund’s £150m-plus price tag made things complicated.
There was a similar story with Harry Kane and Tottenham and the Manchester City links didn’t help.
So, when Cristiano Ronaldo – a player we all know and love – was available for a bargain fee, why not make a move for him?
Ronaldo’s age won’t matter because his fitness levels are off the charts. In fact, he could give any player half his age a run for their money.
Speaking of young strikers, how can we forget about a certain Greenwood?
Q. Why wasn’t Phil Jones sold?
For starters, Phil Jones hasn’t played in over a year and it’s been a while since we’ve even seen him play regularly.
No clubs were interested in signing him and his contract runs till 2023 – with the option to extend for another year.
With no takers and a contract that runs at least for another two years, there was little United could do anyway.
Q. Will Pogba extend his stay?
We are building a world-class team under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer – why wouldn’t Paul Pogba want to be a part of it?
Although there hasn’t been much to suggest Pogba will sign a new deal, we doubt he’ll say no to an improved offer now that Varane, CR7 and Sancho are on the team.
Time is running out, however, with less than 12 months to go on his deal.
Q. And finally.. Can United win trophies with this squad?
Remember when we said we’re not there yet in terms of winning trophies last season? Well, scratch that!
This season, it’d be shocking if United can’t win at least one trophy with the current team. Yes, we don’t have a proper defensive midfielder but that can be fixed in the next window. More or less, we have all the tools needed to get our hands on silverware.
