The 36 year-old scored his fifth goal in five matches across all competitions since his summer arrival from Italian Serie A outfit Juventus. The Red Devils had been trailing to a Paco Alcacer 53rd minute effort, before Alex Telles restored parity in the 60th minute off a fine assist from fellow countryman Bruno Fernandes.
As the game seemed destined to end in a draw, Cristiano Ronaldo stepped up to be counted as he struck in the 95th minute to give his team all the three points. The victory saw United register their first points on board in the current European campaign.
The win also took some of the pressure away from manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who would definitely have come under scrutiny for not being able to come up with a tactical plan to contain the Spaniards. United struggled for most parts of the game and it was unclear as to what pattern Solskjaer had employed.
United also had goalkeeper David de Gea to thank, as he made a couple of saves to keep them in the game but it was Ronaldo who reigned supreme ultimately in the end, as he continues to show why he is referred to as “Mr Champions League”.
Ronaldo’s late show was proof that his quality is undoubted, just like his rival Lionel Messi of PSG. The little Argentine had somewhat of a quiet game but duly delivered in the 74th minute to help the Parisians beat visiting Manchester City 2-0 at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday night.
Since United struggled to create opportunities for Ronaldo earlier on, he had little to do but when the chance finally came, the five-time Champions League winner took it with aplomb.
Truly, whoever has a player like Cristiano Ronaldo definitely has the cheat code to succeed. Every team needs a player of his ilk in their squad.
