There is a lot of negative press coverage surrounding Manchester United right now with a lot of it coming from a myth that they are not as attacking as they should be. But that could not be more wrong. In fact, I’ll explain just why they are the best attacking team in the league and I’ll do it with data.
It is important to note that the season just started and we have already witnessed 5 games from 38. The data could drastically change for any team with just one injury or a dramatic tactical change. But for now, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have the stats on their side.
Manchester United have scored 13 goals this season. Their first game saw them put 5 goals on Leeds United with Bruno Fernandes getting 3 goals while Pogba managed a phenomenal 4 assists. The next game saw them draw against Southampton with an equalising goal from Mason Greenwood. The 19 year old also scored the only goal of the game when they faced Wolverhampton Wanderers.
When Newcastle United came to Old Trafford, United scored 4 goals with a brace from Cristiano Ronaldo before another victory against West Ham United away from home.
This means that United average 2.6 goals per game with a conversion rate of 21% which is one of the very best in the league. The players are extremely clinical when presented with a chance. They have attempted 52 shots from inside the opposition’s box with 12 of them ending up inside the net. The only goal they have scored from outside the box was a screamer by Bruno Fernandes against Newcastle United. What this means is that the team likes walking the ball inside the net rather than shooting from long range, with just 25 of their total shots coming from outside the box.
The most impressive aspect of their style of play is the sheer number of chances they create in every match. They average 3 big chances which means that they have 3 clear cut opportunities to score at least 3 goals during every match. This puts to bed the myth that United cannot break down a low block as most of the teams that have faced them have naturally played deeper.
As far as domination goes, they average a possession percentage of 58.6 which automatically means that they have more of the ball and are moderately accurate with their passes with 85%.
